How privacy works

  • Opened by your browser

    Files are read by this page on your device, the way a desktop app reads them. There is no upload step to wait for.

  • Processed on your device

    PDF.js, pdf-lib and Tesseract run locally. After a tool's engine has loaded, it keeps working with the internet off.

  • Every byte counted

    The meter in the top bar counts everything this page sends. Run any tool and watch it stay at 0 B.

Questions

Is SpitePDF really free?

Yes. Every tool is free with no page limits, no sign-up and no watermark.

Are my files uploaded?

No. Files are opened and processed by your own browser. They never reach a server. The only things that use the network are optional: AI answers (if this site enables them) send the question plus relevant passages of text, never the file; P2P Share and the whiteboard connect two browsers directly.

Does it work offline?

Once a tool's engine has loaded, most tools keep working without a connection. OCR downloads its language data on first use and caches it.

Is there a file size limit?

No limit is imposed. Very large files are limited only by your device's memory; on phones, split or compress huge files first.

Can it edit scanned PDFs?

Run OCR (Searchable PDF) first. That adds a text layer, after which you can search, copy, convert, redact and edit text.

Is the redaction safe?

Yes. Redacted areas are burned into a fresh image of the page and the original text, images and vectors under them are removed. The rest of the page stays searchable.

How strong is the password protection?

Protect PDF uses AES-256, the strongest encryption the PDF format supports. Pick a long password: nobody, including us, can recover it.
